If there is one thing that makes the Laguna Woods community special, it’s the way they care for each other. Now that commitment can extend beyond its people and focus on our beloved animal communities.
Red Bucket Equine Rescue Founder Susan Peirce is in the GDOC studio to talk about her volunteer organization that has been rescuing and transforming the lives of hundreds of horses, ponies, mules, and donkeys for the past ten years. These beautiful animals come to Red Bucket as survivors of abuse, displacement, neglect, age, or can no longer perform their duties as show horses, for example. Susan and her team do their best to create happy endings for these animals. But such a commitment comes at a price (literally)!
“This has been the hardest year in all ten years at Red Bucket,” said Susan Peirce, founder of Red Bucket Equine Rescue. “The hurricanes, floods, and fires of last year really put us in a deficit moving into this year. And we have not been able to catch our breath. Everything we do is to try and not have the horses see that we are tightening our belts.”
What does it take to run Red Bucket Rescue?
Hay is the number one fixed cost, and it costs 19,000 dollars per month to feed the 150 horses currently receiving care.
Red Bucket also needs shavings for beds and funds to maintain shelters. And they need reliable farm equipment to maintain clean facilities for the animals.
