As Producing Artistic Director of Musicals Tonight, Mel Miller began with no experience yet managed to build an enthusiastic subscription audience for 100 shows over 20 years. He learned by experience and now, “retired” (always with an eye to new projects), is a fount of both solid how-to-go-about-it information and colorful anecdotes.
You never know where genius will be born – As a Bronx teenager, Mel came across the 1961 musical by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans in a bargain bin at Sam Goody’s during early forays into musical theater. He didn’t attend a Broadway show until, at age 22, he squired his mother to the original production of Fiddler on the Roof. Zero Mostel played Tevye and orchestra seats cost $15.00. That evening, the marriage of passion and curiosity came together in the most magical way. As they say, the rest is history.
